PLEASE! PLEASE!! PLEASE!!! Spay and neuter your pets!
In July 2012, we won a $25,000 grant from the Florida Animal Friends License Plate Grant Program to spay and neuter pets in Escambia County, FL. Any household making $25k or less per year can get their pets spayed or neutered for FREE!!! Go to www.SpayYourPets.org for details. FREE spays and neuters will be available through May/June 2013. But DON'T DELAY! Santa Rosa County won a similar grant. The Spay Your Pets! website has more info and links. Unfortunately, feral cats are not eligible.
If your household makes $25,001-$35,000, you can get a LOW-COST spay or neuter ($30 or less). Details below.
Escambia County, FL has a low-cost spay and neuter program through the Animal Shelter on Fairfield Dr. in Pensacola. This program is open to residents of Escambia County, FL who meet specific income requirements (see below).

Additional Requirements
- Picture ID of pet owner
- Proof of Escambia County, FL residency (utility bill, lease agreement)
- Proof of your pet's current rabies vaccination (see www.SpayYourPets.org for low-cost rabies shots)
- Proof of income eligibility
- Types of proof of income accepted
- W-2
- Paycheck stub
- Unemployment check stub
- Federal/State financial assistance award letter
- NOTE: Bank statements are not accepted as proof of income
How the program works (for FREE spay/neuter you must apply with us first. See www.SpayYourPets.org for dates/locations/times.)
- Take your pet(s), proof of income, proof of residency, and proof of current rabies vaccination** record for each pet to the Escambia County Animal Shelter to apply for the program, pay, and schedule a surgery appointment. They will give your pet(s) a quick health check and a distemper shot at no charge. The surgery appointment will be made for approximately two weeks from the day you apply. The address is 200 West Fairfield Dr, Pensacola, FL 32505. You must apply during business hours: Noon-6:00pm Tuesday-Saturday. They are closed Sunday and Monday.
- On the day of your pet's appointment, drop your pet off at the shelter between 8:00am-9:00am. REMEMBER to pick up all food and water by 11pm the night before surgery. All pets must be fasted for their safety.
- The shelter staff will inform you what time you can pick up your pet after surgery, usually later that same day before closing.
Additional Information
- Rabies vaccinations** are currently not available at the animal shelter. See a list below of local veterinarians who are willing to give rabies vaccinations without an office visit charge.
- The spay/neuter program is only open to cats and dogs
- Feral (or wild) cats are not eligible
- They will spay females in heat
- Dissolving stitches are used so they don't have to be removed
- Animals must be old enough to have received a rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccine can be given at 3-4 months of age.
- Proof of current rabies vaccination is required
- Rabies vaccinations are not available at the Escambia County Animal Shelter
- Escambia County requires animals be licensed. The price for the tag of a spayed/neutered animal is $8.00 and can be purchased after the animal has been altered. The price for an unaltered animal is $27.00.
Escambia County Animal Control puts down over 7,300 animals every year.

An unspayed female dog, her unneutered mate and their offspring can produce over 67,000 puppies in only 6 years!!!
